Hi DWK dance families,

A few updates and items to be aware of as we continue through our winter session of dance.

Picture Day – This Saturday!

Our studio picture day is coming up this weekend on Saturday, February 24. Please make sure you’ve reviewed all the Picture Day information – including schedule and ordering process – and have your costumes, hair, and makeup organized in advance so that the day runs smoothly for everyone. If you have any questions or need to notify the studio that your dancer cannot attend, please reach out sooner rather than later.

We’re also looking for a couple more volunteers to help check dancers in, collect order forms, etc. If you can help out for the morning and/or the afternoon on Saturday please contact Erin at info@danceworkskenora.com or by texting 807-464-3666

Need new tights? The studio has some available for sale – order through the DWK online store and pick up at the studio.

If your dancer doesn’t have their costume yet they will be distributed at classes this week and any remaining costumes will be at the studio for dancers on Picture Day.

Proper Attire, Hair, and Water Bottles

A reminder to all dancers and families that part coming to dance class is being dressed appropriately. Having the proper attire, shoes, and hairstyle is required and ensures dancers can participate safely and with minimal distractions. In particular, those that require a ballet bun should be using a hairnet and enough hair pins in order to secure the hair so that it does not fall out or need constant adjustments during class.

Need a reminder of the proper attire or hairstyle for your class? Review the dress code online anytime or watch this ballet bun tutorial video for tips. Practicing proper hair now also ensures it is secure for performances and that dancers are comfortable with how the hairstyle feels while they are dancing.

Dancers should also make sure they bring a water bottle to class each week and be sure to fill it up before class starts.

Festival of the Arts & Student Choreography Entries

The adjudicated dance performances for this year’s Kenora District Festival of the Arts will take place on Saturday, April 6 at the Beaver Brae Theatre. All of the Dance Foundations, Primary, Junior, Intermediate, Senior, and Ensemble classes participate in this valuable performance based learning opportunity. We will be sharing more details and scheduling as soon as it is available.

Any dancers that want to participate in the student choreography category are responsible for their own entry forms and payment. (The studio submits the entry forms and payment for all regular classes, with those costs already included in your tuition. This extra entry is only a step required for dancers entering their own choreography and routines). This year’s entry deadline is February 26, 2024. Please make sure to review the syllabus and entry requirements at kdfa.ca

*Dancers entering a student choreography routine can also have a picture taken for that routine at Picture Day. Please let Erin know and we’ll determine where to fit it into the schedule.

KDFA Call for Volunteers

Volunteers are needed for the Kenora District Festival of the Arts Dance adjudicated performances on April 6, 2024 at Beaver Brae. These events are only possible thanks to the people that step up to volunteer. The KDFA committee appreciates your time and energy and hope you’ll be able to help us fill these roles for this year’s event. If you are able to volunteer for one of these volunteer shifts, please contact Helen Franko at vanhelen29@gmail.com

Attendance & Make-up Classes

Did you know that attending a make-up class “erases” an absence and can make it possible for dancers to still be eligible for attendance awards at the end of the year. Dancers are able to attend make-up classes in another level or style if they have missed their own class for any reason. Just send us an email or a text message to let us know when you plan to attend a make-up class. And if you’re unsure what class to attend as a make-up class please reach out to Ms. Erin for suggestions.
